“Winter is not the death of the life cycle, but its crucible.

It’s a time for reflection and recuperation, for slow replenishment, for putting your house in order.
Doing these deeply unfashionable things — slowing down, letting your spare time expand,
getting enough sleep, resting —is a radical act now, but it’s essential.”

~ Katherine May

My Dear Readers~

While the winds and rain and long nights are upon us, and the latest variant of the Coronavirus, Omicron, is making its way around the world, we hunker down with work, with loved ones, with hearty soups and warm bread.  Now we are accustomed to wearing masks inside common areas, now we are looking for our next booster against the next variant.  The Greek Alphabet (so unfair to the Greek Alphabet!) only has twenty-four letters.  We are more than half way through it, but I doubt the Coronavirus cares much about its variant names.  It will just keep mutating….

It is my pleasure to note here that we have been able to give bonuses to our (fully vaxxed and mostly boosted) employees this year.  And even more gratifying is that our managers have cut their bonuses to give their wage-earning staff more.  Hooray for generosity~

Onward into a better New Year!

*Many happy guests stop by my office to share with me their appreciation.  This just warms my heart SO much!  One was a US military veteran who had taken advantage of our special to get the night of 11/11 free, and a 15% discount for the other nights of his stay.  He also wrote to me a lovely card, and of course I wrote back to him…

Another appreciation came in just today:

*Harvard and MIT have scheduled their commencement ceremonies in the same 48 hour period, May 26 & 27 for their 2022 graduates.  In addition, Harvard announced it will hold ceremonies for the classes of 2020 and 2021 in the days after. MIT will do the same for its graduates from those years, with dates ‘in late May’ to be announced. The music festival, Boston Calling, which takes place at the Harvard Stadium, is also scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.  This puts Our Fair City in high stress mode for the whole last week of May.  Restaurants, hotels, rental cars, all services for visitors will be booked for the week starting May 23…. Irving House received a flood of reservations suddenly after Harvard made that announcement.  Please plan your visit for another time…

*We also launched our new web site last month.  Now I will be able to upload this Gazette regularly, and replace photos as we make room improvements over the winter.  We welcome your comments on it, and of course your bookings!

Zoia has been taking pictures and caught the first snow,a delicate adornment that vanished by midday…

Here are scenes from Harvard Square recently:

A line for COVID testing that ran around the block. A community pantry complete with refrigerator maintained by the Harvard Square Business Association, The First Parish Church and generous neighbors.

And, as always, REVELS is giving us a way to welcome the new year.
It is comforting, uplifting, a balm of song and connection, every season!

We hope to see you in better times!
